SXSW

The music portion of SXSW started Tuesday and goes until this Sunday so my online time is being spent researching bands rather than reading fic. It's a full time job sifting through all these choices: http://schedule.sxsw.com/?conference=music&lsort=name&day=ALL&event_type=showcase

We're averaging twelve bands a day so far, which is slacking off for us. We'll see if we can pick up the pace today!

I'll see y'all when it's over.

It's back!

I know I have twenty-five thousand words in me, but NOT IN A ROW! Good luck to everyone that does (as well as the artists participating).

Yesterday the mister went in to the orthopedist and had his cast removed. The X-ray shows the metacarpal is on the mend and he was fitted with a removable cast. He has the rest of the week off and then starts half time on Monday. I'm well behind on all my TViewing and fannish reading but it's been fun having him underfoot. I think we're going to enjoy retirement when it comes around.

Fandom Absence

The mister tripped and broke a bone in his dominant hand so it looks like he'll be joining me at home for an impromptu, not so fun trial run at retirement for a few weeks. That means I'm set for fetching and carrying duty and won't be as fannishly involved as usual. Keep fandom warm for me!

Time to make coffee and off to the orthopedist's office. Joy.

Thank you, everyone, for the birthday wishes and v-gifts. It made a wonderful day even better. The mister and I went to five places we'd never been before and each one was a delight. Barbecue, a long (much needed post barbecue) walk, beer, music and a meet up with friends to sample our friend's delicious new hoppy American brown ale now being brewed at a brewery we'd never visited. There were cupcakes and candles and lots of laughter. It was pretty much a perfect day.

Computer Woes

After months of ever more frequent crashes and freezes, it's time to take the desktop in for some obviously overdue maintenance. Here's hoping a clean up and an upgrade will quickly clear everything right up *fingers crossed*

On a completely different note, yesterday on my walk I took a left where i usually take a right and ten feet away there were about twenty wild parakeets in the middle of the street chattering as they splashed about in a rain puddle. There are several colonies here in Austin and I've been seeing the random two or three on bird feeders in our neighborhood but this is the first time I've seen so many so close up. It was a wonderful way to start the day.

Fail.

So far this weekend has been a bit fail. We planned to see a singer/songwriter yesterday and the mister didn't get home until the guy was ten minutes into his set. We ended up eating and drinking in instead. Why is it that when one component of a plan falls through I don't get dinner out, too?

Today we set out to see Guardians of the Galaxy only to discover that the only two seats together in the theater were in the first row. Really? It's like this movie doesn't want me to see it. Well, it doesn't want me to see it with the mister.

We've got a friend's going away party and a favorite brewpub's 15th anniversary party this afternoon, so let's see if we can finally pull a win out of this! If not, I'm going to bed and sleeping through Labor Day.

Unaccomodating Accomodations

I don't know what it is about my husband and me but hotel desk clerks take one look at us and give us that room that would have picky guests balking: traffic noise, fiddly air conditioner, across from the elevator/ice machine/pool/deaf guest with television blasting into the wee hours.

Some of these things are readily apparent and we have them change our rooms. Unfortunately, the spotlight illuminating the hotel's flagpole right outside our window wasn't noticeable until I turned off the light after midnight. After a brutal travel day of lost luggage, walking and driving in torrential rain, and squelching around in wet shoes (see above re: lost luggage), I wasn't going to roust the mister so we could change rooms after he'd been asleep over an hour. Who needs sleep?

On a plus note, one more state capitol under our belt, excellent barbecue lunch, excellent Rye IPA at a brewpub a 10 minute walk from the hotel, great people watching when the skies opened as we were enjoying our beer, the a fun Kinks cover band at a record store that has great beer on tap. I consider this day a draw!

Antiques Roadshow

Two tickets to the Antiques Roadshow taping this morning just fell into my lap and I'm sitting here wondering if I want to go or not. I'm not a spontaneous person and last time (in San Antonio) I had a panic attack when the appraiser put my mother's pearls in her mouth (yes, that thing where they test if a strand of pearls is real against their teeth is true *shudder).

I'd have to root around and pick a couple things, get myself down to The Convention Center downtown and hang around for three or four hours with a bunch of strangers. Does any of that sound fun without prior mental preparation? To me it sounds a bit like torture.
